The German-Maltese Circle – A Goethe Institute Examination Centre

A Goethe-Institut Prüfungszentrum operates under licence from the Goethe Institute. It offers the officially recognised Goethe-Institute examinations. Here at the German-Maltese Circle we also offer the full range of German language courses that prepare you for the relevant examinations.

All lessons will be held once weekly ONLINE.

General Information

Aim of courses

To develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills with a systematic study of grammar.

Commencement

Courses commencing October 2022. Unless otherwise stated courses cover one scholastic year – October 2022 – June 2023.

Place

The lessons will be held online via Zoom.

Enrolment

Print an Application Form, fill in, sign and mail enclosing the relative payment, or else call at the Circle’s office.  Check office opening hours here.

All applicants are required to state their choice of class upon registration. Please take note of your choice – no individual reminders will be issued. Our staff will be pleased to help you choose your course, though no responsibility is accepted for the final choice which must be made by the individual student.

Enrolment for any class will close once the maximum number of students in that class is reached. Bookings cannot be accepted by telephone.  The German-Maltese Circle reserves the right to cancel any course if it is under-subscribed.

Schoolchildren and persons under 14 years of age cannot be registered for the courses for adults.

Membership subscription 2023

The membership fee is included in the course fee. Membership to the German-Maltese Circle is obligatory for all applicants. Membership entitles applicants to the free use of the Library facilities and to the free access to most of the Circle’s activities.

Courses Fees

The fee for each course is indicated against each course listed. The course fee is to be paid in advance upon enrolment. All course fees are exclusive of textbook and examination fees. Fees cover all lessons for the course applied to.

FEES PAID WILL NOT BE REFUNDED FOR WHATEVER REASON ONCE THE COURSES COMMENCE.
FEES (IN PART OR IN WHOLE) CANNOT BE TRANSFERRED TO COURSES STARTING IN ANOTHER ACADEMIC YEAR.

Payment

By cheque payable “German-Maltese Circle” or by cash settlement at the office or by online direct Bank transfer (request details).

Textbooks

Recommended textbooks are available from the German-Maltese Circle’s office.  See list.

Holidays

Online sessions may be suspended during the Christmas and the Easter period as well as on Public Holidays. Your tutor will inform you of such instances.

Examinations & Certificates

At the end of each course, applicants will be able to sit for an examination consisting of a written and of an oral session leading to a Goethe Institute Certificate. Goethe Institute examinations are well known throughout the world and the associated certificates are accepted as a qualification by employers and further education institutions in many countries.

For students who do not sit for an examination or for students who fail their examination, a Certificate of Attendance can be issued upon request if the applicant would have attended to at least 75% of the total number of lessons held throughout the year.

Self-assessment test

External applicants can assess their German language competence prior to enrolment to any course above the Grundstufe (A1), by doing an online multiple choice test.  Click here to proceed.

Membership

Permanent and temporary residents in Malta of German or Maltese nationality, not below the age of 18 years of age are eligible for membership to the German-Maltese Circle. Bona fide students between the ages of 14 and 18 are accepted as Junior Members.

Library

Section of the Dorothea von Wendland Library

The Library at the German-Maltese Circle is named after Dorothea von Wendland, the wife of a former German Ambassador, who in the early 1970’s was instrumental in the setting up of a lending and reference library in the former premises of the Circle in Floriana.
