will offer a sample of
the
traditional gourmet’s pleasures of the Easter Season in Germany
along with typical Easter decorations. Subject to availability
of stocks, the Stall will open also on Monday, 6th
April between 10.00a.m. and 2.00p.m. and between 5.00 and
7.00p.m. Really worthwhile !!

with much love and care. The German-Maltese Circle wishes to
show this tradition by inviting you and your older children to

Brass Orchestra from Adenau visiting Malta |

The Blasorchester Stadt Adenau is proudly looking back to a long tradition, in fact the original group was founded more than a century ago in 1903. During the first decades of existence it underwent some changes in structure and name, until in 1950 the Blasorchester Stadt Adenau was institutionalised. Today the orchestra has around 30 active musicians, of whom about half are teenagers under 18 years of age. The renown of the orchestra reaches far beyond the Eifel Mountains and the repertoire includes works as diverse as “Lion King”, “Pomp and Circumstance” and “Siahamba” an African Zulu Song. On Tuesday, 7th April, 11.30 – 12.30 hours, the Blasorchester Stadt Adenau will give a concert on the square in front of Xara Palace Hotel in Mdina to which members of the German-Maltese Circle are most welcome to attend. |

Long distance effects of a Newsletter from Messina Palace |

In the year 2005 an interview was published in the January Newsletter of the German-Maltese Circle, which Frau Ingrid Kidder had written after I had told her the story of my life. According to custom the interview was placed on the German-Maltese Circle’s website as part of the online Newsletter and consequently freely accessible to the public.
Due to the post war confusion my family had to flee to West-Germany, leaving all belongings behind in Greifswald. Connections to friends and even whereabouts of people were lost, and decades passed. When recently dissolving the household of her parents, Angelika came across some icons of pre-war times in the form of the artistic works of my father. She wished to be able to present this collection to me in memory of my long before deceased father. However, she had no notion of my doings or address. But she knew about the Google search possibilities, entered my name, and found amongst others the interview in the German-Maltese Circle Newsletter, by means of which she was able to identify me without any doubt. As my employer and position were mentioned, I was most pleasantly surprised about her subsequent phone call, hardly believing my ears. She then offered all of my father’s artistic works to me, which are now hanging in my family’s home in Karlsruhe, much cherished by my children. And, of course, we have kept in contact ever since.
Thanks to the original idea of interviewing a member, the
German-Maltese Circle’s Newsletter contributed to such unimagined
reunion, spanning over hundreds of kilometres and three quarters of
a century, for which I am most grateful. |

Was isst man in Deutschland? |
|
If you ask people what they think is a typical German
dish most of them would probably answer: SAUSAGES. And in
fact, Germ
Another food item, of which Germany produces a very
wide range, is bread! At the bakery shop you will find on average 20
or 30 different types of bread and all over Germany there exist
about 500 different types, ranging from
WEIZENBROT (white rye), to
MISCHBROT (made from wheat and rye), to the very popular
SCHWARZBROT (dark rye). For
Germans, bread is very important and it is their main food at
breakfast and dinner (AbendBROT).
On the other hand, Germans do not eat bread with a cooked meal. For lunch Germans prefer a potato based dish usually prepared with some meat and vegetables. Potatoes can be fried (BRATKARTOFFEL), peeled and boiled (SALZKARTOFFELN), boiled with skin (PELLKARTOFFELN), or baked and stuffed with different fillings (OFENKARTOFFEL). The love for potatoes is also reflected in a highly popular restaurant chain – the KARTOFFELHAUS, restaurants which offer a wide range of dishes based on potatoes! Seasonal fruit or vegetables play an important part in the German food calendar. Each year between mid-May and the 24th of June Germany celebrates the traditional SPARGELZEIT (period of white asparagus), which is harvested during this time. Restaurants offer SPARGEL prepared in all variations and along the country roads one would find many farmers selling their harvest. Since SPARGEL is hardly available during the rest of the year, people try to eat it as often as possible during SPARGELZEIT. A little bit later, in June until July, Germans consume large amounts of ERDBEEREN (strawberries), which are in season during this time. Again restaurants will base entire menus on ERDBEEREN, villages will organise ERDBEERFESTE (strawberry feasts) and everyone is invited to pick his own strawberries against a charge, from one of the many ERDBEERFELDER (strawberry fields). Editor’s Note: As part of its German Language Awareness Programme, the German-Maltese Circle publishes two colour Magazines – LOS Primar intended for schoolchildren attending Primary Schools and LOS Sekundar aimed at children in Forms 1 & 2 learning German at school. The Magazines contain information about Germany of interest to young learners, as well as interactive exercises and comic strips. These issues include a Competition with many prizes to be won. The
Blasorchester Stadt Adenau is expected to visit
Malta early in April and will give several concerts for Maltese
audiences. The tour has been organised and will be lead by the
Mayor of Adenau, Herr Bernd Schiffarth, whom especially the
participants of last year’s German-Maltese Circle’s tour to
Adenau will remember very well. The conductor of the orchestra
is Harre Boers, a well known musician, music teacher and leader
of music schools in Germany as well as in his home country The
Netherlands. 
And
this is nearly the end of a story which began before World
War II in Greifswald in Pomerania, north-eastern Germany. My father
was Professor of Fine Arts at Greifswald University, as well as a
very creative artist. He produced etchings, lithographs and water
colours of Pomeranian and Scandinavian landscapes. He presented some
of his works to a friend in Greifswald with whom he had shared
school times during the twenties and they became bonded in
friendship. Later my father was asked to become godfather of his
daughter Angelika.

all over the world! There exist more than 1,500 kinds of different
sausages and each region is associated with its own speciality: the
THUERINGER ROSTBRATWURST - a
sausage from the state of Thuringia popular for summer barbeques;
the Bavarian WEISSWURST - a
white sausage boiled in water and eaten with sweet mustard; the
CURRYWURST - consisting of hot pork
sausage cut into slices and seasoned with curry sauce, which is the
most famous fastfood in Berlin. In fact, this year a museum entirely
dedicated to the CURRYWURST (Deutsches
Currywurst Museum Berlin) will be opened.
