October
1989 was a bad time to fall into a coma if you lived in East Germany
- and this is precisely what happens to Alex's mother, an activist
for social progress and the improvement of everyday life in socialist
East Germany. Alex has a big problem on his hands when she suddenly
awakens eight months later. Her heart is so weak that any shock
might kill her. And what could be more shocking than the fall of
the Berlin Wall and the triumph of capitalism in her beloved country?
To save his mother, Alex transforms the family apartment into an
island of the past, a kind of socialist museum where his mother
is lovingly duped into believing that nothing has changed. What
begins as a little white lie gets more and more out of hand as Alex's
mother, who feels better every day, wants to watch TV and even leaves
her bed one day…

Later
on this month, Dr Hermann Otto Solms, Vice President
of the German Parliament will be making a courtesy visit to Messina
Palace. Mr Solms will be leading a delegation which will be attending
the "4th Conference of Speakers of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliaments"
being held in Malta late in February. |

 When
I visited Henry Borg in his office at the Mosta Technopark, he struck
me as a very business-minded ardent gentleman, whose goal in life
is that of being an outstanding Managing Director of Sicons Opto Products
Malta Ltd, the local subsidiary of a German manufacturing firm. At
the same time Henry Borg is the striving president of the fairly new
German-Maltese Chamber of Commerce (GMCC). His third and equally important
position is that of Chairman of the Mosta Technopark Tenants Association.
This industrial area on the outskirts of Mosta is a very clean and
presentable compound in which numerous foreign and local firms have
found excellent working conditions.
Who is Henry Borg, and how did his interest in German companies and investments in Malta develop?
This institution, originally a brainchild of the committee of the German-Maltese Circle and enjoying the full support of the German Ambassador, was founded last year in order to serve and promote Maltese-German business relations. Henry Borg, its first president, is of the opinion that the Chamber should make it its goal to promote the extension of these relations to other countries in North-Africa, Eastern Europe and the Near East. He envisages the setting up of a flexible academy with German professionals offering specialised courses and management training, mainly on how to intensify global strategies. In this context he mentioned the website www.german-maltese.com which is already visited not only by people from Europe but also from Canada, Egypt, India and US. At the time of writing Henry Borg was expecting to meet an Italian delegate acting on behalf of the German AHK (Aussenhandelskammer – the Association of Overseas German Chambers of Commerce), Berlin, as he is seeking recognition for the GMCC to be accepted by the AHK. He perceives the GMCC as an ideal venue to promote Maltese-German business relations, for settling commercial disputes and other similar activities; and he is convinced of its future potential and important role in Maltese-German relations. Asked
after his favourite pastime, Henry Borg’s most urgent wish
is to enjoy good health in order to be able to go on long driving
holidays through Europe, right up to Scotland, which he adores.
And this is a hobby his wife Marion and his two sons share wholeheartedly.
Incidentally, the couple will be celebrating their 30th wedding
anniversary within a few weeks. On behalf of our readers I congratulate
Henry and Marion Borg and wish them another thirty years of happy
marriage! |

Früher
wurde nicht viel über sie gesprochen, sie hatten stille Autorität,
wurden in der Familie für ihre Lebensleistung und ihren persönlichen
Beitrag geachtet und, je nach Anlage und Möglichkeiten, von
der nachwachsenden Generation beachtet und versorgt. Politisch und
kommerziell war die ältere Generation im Abseits, sie fanden
sich damit ab, weil sie es nicht anders kannten. Mit dem zunehmenden
Wohlstand und dem wachsenden Einfluss US-amerikanischer Sitten und
Gebräuche begann auch bei uns, zunächst in kleinen Schritten,
ein Wandel zu größerem Selbstbewusstsein der älteren
Generation. Die Zeit der schwarzen Kleider und Anzüge nahm
zunehmend ab und der Rentner/Pensionär fand Gefallen daran,
sich nicht abschieben zu lassen, wenn die gesundheitlichen und materiellen
Voraussetzungen positiv waren. Dazu kamen eine generelle Umstellung
der Lebensverhältnisse innerhalb der Familien, die erforderliche
Mobilität der jungen Genertion zur Sicherung beruflicher Gegenwart
und Zukunft, und die Notwendigkeit der Älteren, eigene Verantwortung
weiter zu übernehmen. Es kam zu einem Zwiespalt, der bei der
Wertung des möglichen Beitrags im gegenseitigen Verhältnis
nach wie vor besteht. Ältere Menschen, die man heute schon
ziemlich früh als “Senioren” beschreibt, lassen
sich solange sie gesund und fit sind, nicht einfach abschieben.
Es gibt sogar Tendenzen in der Wirtschft, die Erfarhrungen der älteren
Generation wieder zum eigenen Wohle zu nutzen. Auch das ist einer
der Widersprüche, die es bei der Thematisierung der “Senioren”
unter dem Stichwort “Chancen und Risiken” zu entdecken
gilt – Der Kommerz hat die Senioren zwar längst als ernst
zu nehmende Käuferschicht entdeckt, aber die Werbung ist immer
noch zurückhaltend, die Priorität liegt eindeutig bei
der Jugend. Auch hier vollzieht sich langsamer Wandel. –
Born
and brought up in Malta, he furthered his education at a polytechnic
school in the U.K, where he lived, and worked for eight years. Returning
to Malta in 1981, he made his first German connections and consequently
was employed and held responsible positions in various German companies
manufacturing precision instruments as well as parts for the automobile
industry. He emphasises that it was his personal style of management
and his interpersonal skills which lifted him swiftly up the ladder
of success; and he sees the presidency of the German-Maltese Chamber
of Commerce as the crown of his career.
