Kurz vor Weihnachten, es ist kalt. Ein eisiger Wind pfeift aus westlicher Richtung, das Radio hatte Schnee angesagt. Eigentlich, so meine ich, passt das Wetter ganz gut zu Weihnachten, bis zum Heiligen Abend sind es nur noch zwei Tage. Ich hatte mir vorgenommen, einen Waldspaziergang zu machen und hoffte darauf, ein paar Rehe, Wildschweine oder zumindest einen Fuchs zu sehen. Vielleicht würde ein Fischreiher über den Bäumen schweben auf seinem Weg zur Wahnbachtalsperre, die ganz in der Nähe liegt. Ich war allein. Der Wind kühlte mir den Hals, die Hände begannen zu frieren und das Einzige was ich tun konnte um mich trotzdem wohl zu fühlen war, einfach schneller zu gehen. So würde es mir bald schon warm werden.

Aber ich hatte mich getäuscht, ich war gar nicht allein. Er muss schon eine ganze Weile in meiner Nähe gewesen sein, hatte mich wohl beobachtet und wollte mir ganz offensichtlich Gesellschaft leisten, ohne mich zu stören. Die Natur hatte ich gesucht, ich sah die Baumgipfel mit denen der Wind spielte, sie schwangen hin und her. Das herabgefallene, trockene Laub flog aufgeregt durch die Bäume, ein Blatt traf mich am Auge, mit dem andren konnte ich gerade noch sehen, wer mich denn da so still begleitete. Da war er wieder, jetzt setzte er sich vor mich auf einen Baumstumpf, blieb aber in sicherer Entfernung. Seine Brust war braun, er hatte listige Augen und schien sich darüber zu freuen, mir Gesellschaft zu leisten. Aber plötzlich war er verschwunden, genauso geräuschlos, wie er gekommen war. Zu meiner Freude sah ich ihn bald wieder, diesmal saß er auf einem Ast und ließ sich vom Winde schaukeln. – Ganz langsam begann es zu schneien. Der scharfe Wind trieb den leichten Schnee vor sich her, aus Flöckchen wurden Wolken, die zwischen den Bäumen verschwanden, oder sich im Graben niederließen. Ich freute mich dass ich nicht allein war, die Natur ist so vielseitig! Ich dachte, dass der Schnee wohl nicht lange liegen bleiben würde, er gibt im Rheinland meistens nur ein kurzes Gastspiel. In diesem Jahr war es wohl der erste, richtige Schnee. Mein Begleiter schien unbeeindruckt von dem, was ihm alles um seine Äugelchen fegte, er starrte immer wieder zu mir, so als wollte er mit mir sprechen. Da, als hätte er meine Gedanken erraten gab er ein kleines „pieps“ von sich, ich denke, dass er ein Buchfink war.

Da der Schnee immer kräftiger wurde und die Dämmerung begann, ging ich den Weg zurück, den ich gekommen war. Ich werde es wohl nie erfahren, ob mein stiller Begleiter traurig darüber war, er hat sich wortlos verabschiedet und flog Richtung Talsperre, vielleicht hat er auch nur etwas Durst gehabt? – Ich hatte Glück, dass gerade ein Schneepflug vorbei kam, denn inzwischen waren die Straßen teilweise verweht. Ich dachte darüber nach, wie schnell sich unser Umfeld verändern kann, und wie oft wir uns darauf einstellen müssen, wenn wir uns behaupten wollen. In mancher Hinsicht, so dachte ich, hat es ein Vogel leichter, er kann einfach davon fliegen und alles hinter sich lassen. Ob das wohl wirklich so ist?! (Guenter Schlichte)

Second Term: Students are reminded that the lessons for the second term of the 2003-2004 Language Courses will recommence after the Christmas and New Year holidays as from Monday, 5th January.

Conversation Meetings: Dr Günter Jacobs announces that his Winter 2004 conversation meetings shall start as from Wednesday, 7th January. These weekly meetings start at 18.30hours and are expected to go on until the 10th March.

Certificates: Members who have applied for their 2002-2003 German language Certificate and have not yet collected it, are reminded that they are to do so from the office as soon as possible. In the meantime photographs taken during the Ceremony held last month are also available from the office.

New Course: A German language course for Beginners will start on Wednesday, 7th January with lessons of two hours each every Wednesday and Friday. A few places are still available - more information from the office.

Scholarships: The Executive Committee has nominated Marlene Xiberras and Victor Pace for the 2004 four-week language scholarships offered by the Goethe Institute. Marlene who attends our courses in Gozo came first in the Grundstufe II courses, while Victor Pace, a Government Pharmacist was the overall best student in the Grundstufe IA courses organised last year. In the meantime Claudette Bonnici and Tanya Chircop were nominated for the scholarships reserved for teachers of German.

Germans gave it the nickname “TEURO” = more expensive, as they felt that previous price disciplines exercised by certain businesses, particularly in the hotel-, food- and beverage industry had given way to unjustified increases. By now core European countries and their citizens have been able to gain experience, the EURO is no longer a stranger! The currency has established itself as reliable, stable and workable. There was occasional criticism about the lack of sufficient difference between 1 and 2 Euro coins. I do not believe, that this is still a serious issue. Time will help to adjust this matter; it should not be too difficult. Falsifications, already discovered may be more serious problems to be solved by the authorised experts.

The Euro has proved itself to be trustworthy and practical. One of the big advantages for business and private use is its easy means for price comparisons and the removal of exchange charges between countries using Euro as their common European currency. Price and cost transparency is better than ever before. There is still some doubt here and there about the EURO stability following the Union’s forthcomong enlargement. Germany and France are already facing hopefully temporary difficulties in meeting the stringent stability targets set to ensure that the currency is going to remain a “hard currency”. Those responsible are apparently doing their best to keep the situation under control. The economic slowdown worldwide is showing signs of improvement; there is good reason for optimism that a recovered economy will help to eradicate current concerns. While a common European currency is welcome for those who have opted for its use, there has been an unpleasant negative impact affecting consumer prices, which should not be wiped under the carpet. It had been feared all along that in commerce, while the opportunity was presenting itself, prices might rise beyond the natural round offs to an extent which could be harmful to the client’s purse.

Although a great number of items remained more or less unaffected, the service sector in particular saw increases far beyond what may be explained as “reasonable”. This is particularly true for accommodation and the food and beverage market. Even the public sector in a number of cities did not hesitate for long to revise some of their fee structures upwards - parking fees may be a good example. In general, a 20 to 50% increase on restaurant bills, depending on the type and image of the restaurant is being adopted. This is happening in a period, when salaries and wages are stagnant. Lack of opportunities for more business and employment is a limiting factor forever increasing costs same as we used to see it in the past. While official data (statistics) suggests that the inflationary effects are marginal, spending money is gradually getting scarcer!

The negative side-effects are not really a surprise, actually some of it had been expected and the German government tried to minimise abuse of the new price system. The real estate market seems to have profited too - Maltese may take this for granted and indeed, there is a good reason for it. However the EURO will spread further with the enlarged European Union, one does not have to be a prophet to know that it is going to happen. It was born just over two years ago, a run-out date cannot be predicted, and it is a success story. (Guenter Schlichte)
 

Eichberg. (sf) – Besuch aus Malta konnten der ärztliche Direktor der Klinik Eichberg, Dr. Anton Lehr, und die leitende Ergotherapeutin Barbara Kroll am vergangenen Dienstag im Zentrum für Soziale Psychiatrie Rheinblick begrüßen. Joseph Busuttil ist leitender Ergotherapeut einer psychiatrischen Klinik auf Malta und besucht für eine Woche das ZSP Rheinblick, um sich hier einen Einblick in die psychiatrische Versorgung in Deutchland zu verschaffen. Im Rahmen eines von der EU geförderten Austauschprogrammes werden in den nächsten Monaten drei Mitarbeiter aus der Klinik in Malta für jeweils sechs Wochen in den unterschiedlichen ergotherapeutischen Bereichen des ZPS Rheinblick hospitieren. Der Kontakt zwischen Busuttil und dem ZSP entstand über die Europa-Fachhochschule Fresenius, die seit einigen Jahren Ergotherapeuten ausbildet und Schüler und Studenten zur praktischen Ausbildung in die Ergotherapie der ZSP Eichberg schickt.

“Ergotherapie ist eine handlungsorientierte Therapieform, bei der es um die Aktivität der Patienten geht. Die unterschiedlichen Materialien wie Ton, holz oder Seide, die der Ergotherapie zum Einsatz kommen, ermöglichen unter-schiedliche Erfahrungen und helfen den Patienten, die eigenen Fähigkeiten und Fertigkeiten besser einzuschätzen. Über den aktiven Umgang mit diesen Materialien machen sie Erfahrungen mit den Sinnen, wird ihre Kreativität angesprochen und sie entdecken neue Handlungsmöglichkeiten”, so Barbara Kroll. Im Rahmen einer psychischen Erkrankung könne es entspannend und förderlich sein, eine Tätigkeit auszuüben, sich auf eine Aufgabe zu konzentrieren und Fähigkeiten wieter zu entwikkeln oder zu trainieren.
 

A discussion, broadcast live on 3rd December from Europa Haus, which houses the Representation of the European Commission in Berlin, was the highlight of a “Malta Week” on Deutschlandfunk, Germany’s premier public information radio station. Chaired by Dr Christoph von Marchall, political columnist of the Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel, Prof. Henry Frendo from the University of Malta, former German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, Anja Klug from UNHCR, and Prof. Josef Schmid from the University of Bamberg discussed “The Asylum and Immigration Policy of the European Union” following an introduction by Malta’s Ambassador to Germany, Mr William C. Spiteri. The sizeable audience present at the discussion venue comprised journalists, politicians and academics and included many members of the Maltese community in Berlin, whilst the Radio audience was estimated at 2 million listeners.
The “Malta Week” concluded a series entitled “10 plus – Ein Europa” (Plus 10-One Europe) on Deutschlandfunk, and was broadcast during the week between the 29th November and the 5th December. It included documentaries and interviews on the entire spectrum of Maltese life: politics, culture, the environment, education, trade, etc. A crew from Deutschlandfunk was in Malta during October to record interviews and gather material. The Circle’s President, Mr Albert Friggieri was one of the personalities interviewed.

Anette arrived in Malta 1995 in order to work for one year at the Department of Anatomy at the University of Malta as a scientist in a cancer research project. She points out, that her decision to come to Malta was originally also amplified by the fact that she would also have the opportunity to work at one of Europe’s oldest medical faculties, the fame of which she had always known and admired.

As is so often the case with people originating from Germany or other central European countries, Anette - impressed by the Mediterranean style of life and the friendliness in daily communication - simply stayed on. Emphasising her observation of finding in the Maltese people a great willingness to help others, even strangers, if need arises Anette remarks that she originally noticed this amongst members of Maltese families. But she also recollects various instances of for example spontaneous help in cases when her friends’ car suddenly broke down, or of her losing her way in the villages, when there was always assistance with pleasing smiles, especially when trying to make use of her first Maltese words. Incidentally she learned Maltese at the German-Maltese Circle and she tries to exercise it diligently. Another reason for her not returning too often to her home country, Germany, is the sunny weather which offers ample opportunity for outdoor life most of the year.

Anette spent a happy childhood in idyllic Korbach am Edersee, a small town in the Hessian countryside, attended the Universities of Bielefeld and Bonn, where she completed her studies as biologist, specialising in genetics in 1994. While working as a Scientific Research Associate in Bonn, she also placed emphasis on radio journalism, later writing scientific, as well as general articles on Maltese customs and traditions, often published in the Newsletters of the Deutsch-Maltesische Gesellschaft and Andreas Bote.

Today Anette is presenter and producer for the German Programme of the ”Voice of the Mediterranean” as well as free-lance journalist (specialised in science) for ”Deutsche Welle”, ”Deutschlandfunk” and other German Radio stations; often interviewing German speaking visitors to Malta, who come for special assignments like company representatives, artists and politicians. There seems to be a great number of regular listeners to these programmes, every now and then mailing some flattering comments or asking for more information. She quotes: ”Gibt es auf Malta auch Krankenwagen und ein Krankenhaus oder müssen die Patienten zum Festland geflogen werden?” “Are ambulances and a hospital available on Malta or must patients be flown to the mainland?” Or: ”Does Malta really have a University?” So she tries her best to inform or even educate listeners on subjects of modern life in Malta.

Apart from the above she is sought after as online editor and web-designer. And furthermore she is an active member of the Committee of the Evangelisch-Ökumenische Andreas Gemeinde in Malta, serving German speaking Christians living in or visiting Malta, and offering Sunday services at St. Andrews Church in Valletta.

And if you wonder about her favourite pastime: Taking my cocker spaniel Sammy for long walks in the beautiful Maltese countryside, Anette replied with a broad smile to my last question.

Thema des neuesten Videos der Kubus-Reihe ist moderne Musik. Im ersten Beitrag wird die Arbeit einer Bürgerstiftung gezeigt, die sich um Jugendliche aus sozialen Brennpunkten kümmert. Im vorgestellten Musikprojekt lernen Jugendliche, ihre Instrumente aus Schrott selber zu bauen und auf Ihnen Musik zu machen. Die Erfolge in den zahlreichen Konzerten sind groß. Im zweiten Beitrag wird die erste deutsche Popakademie vorgestellt. Sie wurde erst im Herbst letzten Jahres in Mannheim, der heimlichen Hauptstadt des deutschen Pop, eröffnet und ist die erste ihrer Art.
