PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION EMOTION OF LIGHT & SHADOW Open till: Tuesday, 14th May 2002 Featuring: A collection of female portraitures by photographer MARTIN ABELA Venue: Messina Palace, Valletta Opening: Weekdays from 8.30a.m. till 12.30p.m. And from 4.30p.m. till 8.30p.m. Saturdays from 9.00a.m. till noon Entrance: Free CELEBRATING HÄNDEL - A POSTER EXHIBITION Which will be inaugurated by the German Ambassador H.E.Mr Georg Merten on Friday, 17th May 2002 at 19.00 hours at Messina Palace. Nineteen large posters depicting the German composer’s connection with the city of Halle, his birthplace. The display begins with an overview of Halle throughout the centuries and its most prominent places. It continues to illustrate how Halle has later reflected the life of its great son through the organisation of numerous festivals, exhibitions and conferences. Open till the 31st May. PUBLIC LECTURE: “BERNHARD von GUDDEN” - who at the height of his career was commissioned to provide psychiatric care for the Bavarian royal family. He was the personal doctor of the mentally diseased Prince Rudolf and he was later assigned to examine and treat King Ludwig II of Bavaria. On July 13th 1886 at about 6 p.m., Ludwig (at left in drawing) and his physician, Dr. von Gudden, went out for a stroll around Berg Castle where the king was held prisoner. When they had not returned by 8 p.m., the police began a search. They discovered the men’s bodies floating in nearby Lake Starnberg. No cause of death was ever given for either man. Dr Hector Cutajar will deliver a lecture (in English) at Messina Palace on Wednesday, 29th May at 19.00 hours. Everyone is welcome!

The German-Maltese Circle has been requested to choose a candidate to participate in the EUROCAMP 2002 which will be held between the 8th and the 28th July in Letzlingen (Saxony-Anhalt). Eligible are members of the German-Maltese Circle aged between 18 and 25 and with a knowledge of German sufficient to be able to communicate. Only those whose current membership has been paid up by the 31st March 2002 will be considered. The chosen person will join a group of other 90 young people from around Europe working in various interesting projects and participating in the many leisure time events organised throughout the duration of the Eurocamp. Travel, board, accomodation and programme expenses will be all paid. More information will be given to those who apply. Application forms available from the office. The mother of the Mothers Day is an American woman. The language of flowers which comes from the orient was brought to England by Lady Mary Wortley. The authoress gives us some examples of flowers and what they represent.
This contribution starts by stating that “The reason that there are so many Singles is a shortage of space”. The engaged couple wants to have a special place where the wedding can take place. But which place is nowadays still considered to be a special place? There follows a dialogue of a couple discussing this problem. |

The German-Maltese Circle is promoting for its younger members a holiday to Oberwesel 20th July to 3rd August 2002 Oberwesel is a small German town not far from Bonn and Cologne overlooking the Rhine. Our group will be accomodated in a youth hotel which along with a 5-star hotel are found in Schonburg, a restored castle on the side of the Rhine valley. This international youth holiday brings together for a forthnight about 70 young people (16 to 25 years) from 6 or 7 different countries. The programme is organised by a professional team of animators and includes a host of stimulating and original activities. Not only excursions to the nearby cities of Bonn, Cologne, Mainz, Koblenz and a short Rhine cruise to Boppard are included in the programme but also several other exciting group games and artistic expressions. Treasure hunts, chaos games, crafts and international evenings as well as a never ending disco located on the grounds - playing good music 24 hours a day are part of the varied menu. All the Maltese groups who participated in past editions of this unique holiday have come back very enthusiastic about it even writing its praise in the local press. This holiday package is being organised together with the Youth Travel Circle. The price of Lm 240 includes air travel, accommodation in a youth hotel, all excursions, all food, a leader and the programme of games, meetings and entertainment. Everything is included. What is not included are airport taxes, personal expenses, and the insurance which we can offer at a group rate of Lm 11.50. Booking secured by paying a deposit of Lm 50 before the 15'" June at the German-Maltese Circle.

The German-Maltese Circle announces that also this year it will organise a Pavilion of German Products and Services at the Malta International Trade Fair which will be held between the 26th June and the 7th July. The German-Maltese Circle was founded in 1962. Since January our Association has been commemorating its 40th Anniversary very successfully with a variety of activities. We would like to share these events (most of which were held at our Messina Palace) with you on these pages. 30th January "Is German really a difficult language?" a well-attended public forum with a panel made up of Frau Frauke van der Werff from the Goethe Institute of Milan, GMC President, Mr Albert Friggieri and Mr Herbert Conrad a former teacher of German for many years at the University of Malta, in State Schools and at the German-Maltese Circle. 13th February Screening of German entries in the 40th Golden Knight International Video Festival – in association with the Malta Amateur Cine Circle 20th February Prof Dr Francis Jarman from the University of Hildesheim delivered a lecture on "The World of German Universities" at the end of which a pleasant surprise awaited Robert Bonnici, a University student and a member of our Association. Robert had applied to spend one semester at the University of Hildesheim on the basis of the Socrates students’ exchange programme. Dr Jarman announced that as a special welcome to Robert who happened to be the first Maltese student at the University of Hildesheim, it was decided to grant him a special scholarship for his stay in Germany. 13th March Prof. Dr Rainer Dietrich, ordentlicher Professor at the Institute of German and Linguistics of the Humboldt University in Berlin gave a most interesting lecture on the use of language in particularly stressful situations, concentrating on the use of language in the cockpit. This was a special occasion for GMC President Mr Albert Friggieri since as a student of Heidelberg University he had met Prof. Dietrich there for the first time 30 years ago! Mr Friggieri spent six years as a student of Prof. Dietrich. 14th March Mrs Ingrid B.Kidder, the Vice-President of the Deutsch-Maltesische Gesellschaft opened an exhibition of paintings by newcomer George Farrugia. The Exhibition was also held under the auspices of the Valletta History & Elegance Festival 2002. A crowd of about 150 guests, mostly local painters and ceramists, led by the German Ambassador, H.E.Mr Georg Merten patronised the opening of this Exhibition. 31st March Reception hosted by Ambassador H.E.Mr Georg Merten in honour of the Kammersolisten Augsburg who had performed two lovely concerts over Easter at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta. 16th April An extremely superb Concert of Sacred Music by JS Bach at St John's Co-Cathedral attended by well over 800 persons with the participation of Claire Massa (Mezzo Soprano), Rebecca Hall and Robert Calleja (Flaut), John McDonough (Oboe) and Alice Pullen (Harpsichord) 19th April The Corinthia San Gorg Tower Suite was packed with parents of students attending the Sir Adrian Dingli Girls’ Junior Lyceum (Pembroke), teachers, as well as with German and Maltese members of the German-Maltese Circle for an evening dedicated to German music and literature. In all, over one hundred girls from the Sir Adrian Dingli Girls’ Junior Lyceum participated reciting poems and other literary texts written by famous German authors such as Schiller, Krüss, Goethe and Busch and performing in the School Orchestra and Choir rendering German traditional folk-songs or popular selections by well-known German composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, Bach, Mendelssohn and Haydn. 24th April The German Ambassador, H.E.Mr Georg Merten opened "Emotions of Light & Shadow" an exhibition of modern digitally composed photographs by Martin Abela also in front of a large audience.

Am 22. September 2002 findet die Wahl zum Deutschen Bundestag statt. Deutsche, die außerhalb der Bundesrepublik Deutschland leben und hier keine Wohnung mehr innehaben, können bei Vorliegen der sonstigen wahlrechtlichen Voraussetzungen an der Wahl teilnehmen. Für ihre Wahlteilnahme ist u.a. Voraussetzung, dass sie 1. nach dem 23. Mai 1949 und vor ihrem Fortzug aus der Bundesrepublik Deutschland1) mindestens drei Monate ununterbrochen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland1) gewohnt oder sich dort sonst gewöhnlich aufgehalten haben; 2. a) in Gebieten der übrigen Mitgliedstaaten des Europarates leben oder b) in anderen Gebieten leben und am Wahltage seit ihrem Fortzug aus der Bundesrepublik Deutschland'1) nicht mehr als 25 Jahre verstrichen sind; 3. in ein Wählerverzeichnis in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland eingetragen sind. Diese Eintragung erfolgt nur auf Antrag. Der Antrag ist auf einem Formblatt zu stellen; er soll bald nach dieser Bekanntmachung abgesandt werden. Einem Antrag, der erst am 2. September 2002 oder später bei der zuständigen Gemeindebehörde eingeht, kann nicht mehr entsprochen werden (§ 18 Abs. 1 der Bundeswahlordnung). SEHNSUCHT von Guenter Schlichte |

Es gibt immer gute Gründe für die Sehnsucht, ohne “longing for” ist das Leben leer. Wer hätte nicht gern eine Villa oder eine Wohnung in einer ruhigen Bucht am Meer, einen Partner, den wir lieben können, der uns achtet und nicht verdrängt, der uns schon mal liebe Worte und hin und wieder ein paar Blumen schenkt?! Wir wünschen uns auch kleine Dinge, die uns erfreuen und die wir oft vermissen, es gibt so manches wovon wir träumen ohne es zu ahnen oder auch zu wissen. Natürlich gibt es Pflichten, Zwänge und auch Ideale zu bedenken, auch Prioritäten, man muss sein Leben aber nicht darauf beschränken. Da ist der positive Dialog, ein Buch, Musik die uns so viel für unser Leben geben, die Harmonie in unsere Herzen spült, die wir nach Wohlbefinden streben. Andere wünschen sich eher Gesundheit, Zärtlichkeit, Anerkennung oder Geborgenheit, für Luxus und für materielle Werte fehlt Ihnen die Antenne, sie haben dafür keine Zeit. Sehnsucht, allein das Wort kann schon elektrisieren, es hat so viele Facetten, der eine sieht allein die Gegenwart, der andere möchte für sich die Zukunft retten. Es ist wohl unbestritten, dass Sehnsucht motiviert, die Wünsche schürt und treibt, uns auch zum Sklaven macht, der unser Ich sich einverleibt. Nichts ist indes verwerflich an Wünschen die wir haben und die wir pflegen, die Vorfreude ist ein wichtiger Teil der Freude, die hilft unser Inneres anzuregen.

| History, monks and wine – the island of Reichenau |

Little is known of the origins of the Reichenau monastery complex on Lake Constance: In 724, a monk by the name of Pirmin came to the island in Lake Constance and founded the monastery. It is not known where he came from. According to legend, he banished the water snakes and did what all monks did at the time: He cleared the forest and cultivated the land. A little later, under the Carolingians, Charlemagne and Ludwig the Pious, the monastery rose to become one of the Reich’s top educational centres, experiencing a golden age. On entering the historic building today, you are taking a step back into the Middle Ages (as long as you have remembered to switch off your mobile phone). In the eastern part of the former Benedictine monastery of St. Mary and St. Mark in Mittelzell there are construction elements dating back to the Carolingian period. An apse dating back to the 12" century rounds off the Romanesque basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul in Niederzell. The church of St. George in Oberzell is the only remaining example of a completely illustrated church interior north of the Alps. The wall paintings date back to the period before the year 1000, making them the oldest anywhere in Germany. All of these may be visited, and you will find more historical monuments if you try. The achievements of the monks of Reichenau in the Early and High Middle Ages, however, were by no means restricted to the island. Any library in the world that owns an illuminated book from the Reichenau School is proud to do so. In the year 827, Abbot Strabo presented Germany with a description of a monastic herb garden in Latin hexameters which may be considered to be the first biology book. In the High Middle Ages, the monastery lay in a strategically important position on the route of the German emperors to Northern Italy. The high nobility had their sons educated here. In the 11th century, Hermann der Lahme worked in Reichenau. He was a scientist of many talents, occupying himself with astronomy and mathematics, music and history. The island today, with an area of 430 hectares, is linked to the mainland, the “Bodanruck” by a bridge. It, too, is a “garden kingdom“, but in a different sense to the Dessau-Wörlitz parks. For more than 1000 years, people have been harvesting vegetables, fruit, grapes and cereal crops on this island. Today, a quarter of the island’s 240 hectares is under glass, enabling flowers, cucumbers, beans, courgettes and tomatoes to ripen undisturbed. Modern vegetable cultivation methods using artificial watering systems and two big pump systems began here in the thirties of the last century. Thus, Reichenau, the “rich meadow”, lives up to its name: The best way to relax after the exhaustion of viewing the heavenly paradise of the old monastery grounds is to take a foretaste of heaven on earth: a bottle of Reichenauer Hochwart, fried whitefish from Lake Constance, with potatoes and vegetables. Germany has such cultural heritage sites in 25 places: destinations worth visiting.

It is organised by the Foreign Cultural Institutes in Italy. The theme is dialogue and communication. The first prize is 1000 Euro. Deadline is the 15.12.2002. The Gateway to Germany. This internet portal will help you find your way in the myriad of facilities, services and information the different government and parastatal organisations in Germany are offering. This site was launched by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and the German Office of Foreign Trade which is responsible for coordinating the website content. Conversation Meetings The conversation meetings for members of the German-Maltese Circle who possess a good command of the German language will recommence under the direction of Dr Gunter Jacobs as from Wednesday, 29th May at 18.30hours. End of course Examinations End of course examinations for the Grundstufe classes are due in the last week of June. Please look out for the next Newsletter for more details regarding application and timetable. In the meantime, students are informed that past papers of the Grundstufe examinations (1996-2001) can be obtained from the Office. Assessment tests will also be held for students attending our Mittelstufe and ZOP Year One courses. The last day of lessons for the current scholastic year will be Wednesday, 19th June 2002.
