GERMAN LANGUAGE COURSES

The German language courses for the scholastic year 2001-2002 have started on Thursday, 5th October. All students are requested to be punctual for their lessons and to use the Circle's facilities with care. Regular attendance is essential for success in these courses. Students are informed that no one will be allowed to sit for the end-of-course examinations should his/her attendance during the year be less than 60%. The recommended textbooks are available from the Circle's Library. Two Scholarships consisting of a 4-week German langauge course at a Goethe Institute in Germany will be awarded to the best two students in these courses.

Also starting this month are classes for schoolchildren in Forms 1 to 4 who are taking German at school as well as a class for children aged 11 to 13 who wish to start learning German. These classes are being held on Saturday mornings. Another course which is held on Wednesday evenings is that which is preparing Form 5 students for their O level in German. Some places are still available for all these classes.

October sees the beginning of the Circle's financial year and this is hence the month for the renewal of your membership! Members who have not yet renewed their membership for the year 2001-2002 are requested to do so immediately. The German-Maltese Circle needs your support.

Persons who have enrolled for our courses already have their membership renewed

The Annual General Meeting of our Association will be held on Wednesday, 31st October. During this meeting, we give a review of the administrative and financial performance for the year 2000-2001. The new Executive Committee will also be elected. For more information please refer to page 4 of this Newsletter. Members who wish to be nominated to the Committee are to contact the office by not later than the 24th October.

BIBLIOTHEK

7th NOVEMBER 2001

The Alliance Française de Malte, the British Council, the German-Maltese Circle, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura and the Cìrculo Cultural Hispano-Maltés will be organising ILSNA - a Music-Literary Evening dedicated to the European Year of Languages at the Nicolo Isouard Hall (Foyer) at the Manoel Theatre on Wednesday, 7th November 2001 at 7.30p.m. This is the first time that all the Cultural Institutes representing European Union countries in Malta are joining forces with the aim of presenting to the Maltese public an evening of poetry and music from England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and from the host country Malta. Taking part in this event are The Vallette Clarinet Quartet, soprano Marita Bezzina and pianist Leanne Baldacchino Anastasi. Musical coordination is in the hands of Maestro Ronnie Debattista. Also taking part is Flamenco dancer Rosanna Maya accompanied by guitarist Pepe el Tiburon. Our members and their guests are welcome to attend. Entrance is free.

Some Brain Training by Ingrid Kidder

Some months ago I supplied a list of German words consisting of four syllables to be learnt as extras when time is at hand. Today I selected nouns with three syllables, grouped them in threes in alphabetical order, so your brain may form a connection between the words and thus help for easy memorising. If three a day would be too much, well, try a group every second day! Please note that the English translations offer just one of several possible meanings. The plural is stated abbreviated in brackets, e.g. die Absender (no additional ending), die AusgrabungEN.

We have learned how to fly like birds, how to swim like fish
But we have forgotten the simple art to live like brothers in a fair and generous way!
Dabei ist es so einfach, sich die Hände zu geben - not to be against each
other, we shall stand together. It is our borrowed life, especially for our children's future.
The sun is not rising just for one, the brightness is for every creature on
earth. It is a pity only a few are recognizing this very important precious
value in life. Most people are unsatisfied because of ignorance?
Goethe's Faust proclaims:
If feelings fails you, vain will be your course,…..
One for all and all for one! Live for PEACE!
