General Information on German Language Courses for Adults

Target Group

The German language courses are planned for those who want
• to start or to continue their studies in the language
• to increase their command of German for private or professional reasons
• to prepare themselves for examinations in German

Course Types

These are determined by the language background of the students
• German for beginners
• German for beginners with a previous knowledge
• German for advanced students

Courses on offer

Grundstufe I - Level A1 (Beginners' First Year)
Starting October - lessons of 90 minutes held twice weekly in the evening

Previous knowledge required: None
Aims of the course: 
Listening/Speaking - CAN understand basic instructions or take part in a basic factual conversation on a predictable topic.
Reading: CAN understand basic notices, instructions or information.
Writing: CAN complete basic forms, and write notes including times, dates and places.

Grundstufe II - Level A2 (Beginners' Second Year)
Starting October - lessons of 120 minutes held twice weekly in the evening

Previous knowledge required: Course content Level AI
Aims of the course: Preparation for the SEC "O"   level (University of Malta) examination
Listening/Speaking: CAN express simple opinions or requirements in a familiar context.
Reading: CAN understand straightforward information within a known area, such as on products and signs and simple textbooks or reports on familiar matters.
Writing: CAN complete forms and write short simple letters or postcards related to personal information.

Course leading to Zertifikat Deutsch (ZD) or for the Zertifikat Deutsch für jugendliche (ZDj) (Goethe Institute Zertifikat B1)
Starting October - lessons of 90 minutes held twice weekly in the evening
Previous knowledge required: "O" level or Level A2 standard
Aims of the course: 
Listening/Speaking: CAN express opinions on abstract/cultural matters in a limited way or offer advice within a known area, and understand instructions or public announcements.
Reading: CAN understand routine information and articles, and the general meaning of non-routine information within a familiar area.
Writing: CAN write letters or make notes on familiar or predictable matters.

Courses leading to the Goethe Institut Zertifikat B2 or for the Advanced Level German (University of Malta)
Starting October - lessons of 120 minutes held twice weekly in the evening

Previous knowledge required: Level B1 standard
Aims of the course: 
Listening/Speaking: CAN follow or give a talk on a familiar topic or keep up a conversation on a fairly wide range of topics.
Reading: CAN scan texts for relevant information, and understand detailed instructions or advice.
Writing: CAN make notes while someone is talking or write a letter including non-standard requests.

Course leading to the Goethe Institut Zertifikat C1
Starting October - lessons of 90 minutes held twice weekly in the evening

Previous knowledge required: Level B2 standard
Aims of the course: 
Listening/Speaking: CAN contribute effectively to meetings and seminars within own area of work or keep up a casual conversation with a good degree of fluency, coping with abstract expressions.
Reading: CAN read quickly enough to cope with an academic course, to read the media for information or to understand non-standard correspondence.
Writing: CAN prepare/draft professional correspondence, take reasonably accurate notes in meetings or write an essay which shows an ability to communicate.

Course leading to the Zentrale Oberstufen Prüfung - Goethe Institut Zertifikat C2
Starting October - lessons of 120 minutes held twice weekly in the evening

Previous knowledge required: Level C1 standard
Aims of the course: 
Listening/Speaking: CAN advise on or talk about complex or sensitive issues, understanding colloquial references and dealing confidently with hostile questions.
Reading: CAN understand documents, correspondence and reports, including the finer points of complex texts.
Writing: CAN write letters on any subject and full notes of meetings or seminars with good expression and accuracy.

Specialised & Short courses
Learn German the Fast & Fun Way
- short courses of 12 lessons of 120 minutes each starting every October, January and May 

The German-Maltese Circle also offers courses in the German language, tailor-made to specific areas of interest, such as German for Hotels & Restaurants, German for Industry, German for Business, etc. Other courses include Conversation in German, revision courses for schoolchildren and communicating in Maltese to foreigners. Full details available upon request from interested individuals or groups.

Recommended textbooks and audio aids for all courses are available from the German-Maltese Circle

Examinations

Each level (except for the short courses) ends with an examination (oral and written). 

Goethe-Institut examinations are internationally recognised and regarded as reliable proof of qualifications in German. The certificates and diplomas offered by the Goethe-Institute not only improve one's opportunities in the international market place, but are often accepted as entrance qualifications by German universities without any further evidence of linguistic capability being required.

Certificates

A student receives a certificate upon the successful completion of all courses.

Enrolment

• Except for courses specific to schoolchildren, persons under 14 years of age cannot be registered for any course
• Enrolment for all courses can be effected during August and September
• The German-Maltese Circle's office is open on weekdays from 8.30a.m. till 12.30p.m. and from 4.30p.m. till 8.30p.m. and on Saturdays between 8.30a.m. and 1.00p.m.
• All students must observe the rules and regulations of the German-Maltese Circle

Fees

• Applicants will be required to become members of the German-Maltese Circle (Annual subscription fee Lm5/€11.65)

Scholarships

Scholarships at Goethe Institutes in Germany are annually awarded to the best students attending courses at the German-Maltese Circle.
