"Fontane Effi Briest" B/W, 140 min., 1972 - 1974
Effi Briest is still far too young to marry
when she is betrothed to Baron von Instetten. Her encounter with
Major Crampas adds a temporary flurry of excitement to her life.
Years later, the Baron learns of their relationship, which is

Fontane’s novel, yet creates his own unique imagery.

The story takes place in Germany
during reconstruction after World War II. Maria Braun manages to

"Veronika Voss" B/W, 104 min., 1981
Fassbinder tells a melancholy tale inspired by
former UFA star Sybille Schmitz’s life in post-war Germany.
Drug-addicted actress Veronika Voss is unable to repeat her
earlier big-screen successes; exasperated, she commits suicide
while the Pope’s Easter blessing is broadcast in the background.
In the second film of his 1950s trilogy, Fassbinder masterfully
employs the stylistic devices of the UFA melodrama.
