German Language Courses for Adults 2011 - 2012


  The German-Maltese Circle - A Goethe Zentrum
 
A Goethe-Institut Prüfungszentrum operates under licence from the Goethe Institut. It offers the officially recognised Goethe-Institut examinations. Here at the German-Maltese Circle we also offer the full range of German language courses that prepare you for the relevant examinations.


GENERAL INFORMATION 

Aim of courses: To develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills with a systematic study of grammar.  

Commencement: Courses commencing October 2011.  Unless otherwise stated courses cover one scholastic year - October 2011 - June 2012

Place: Messina Palace, 141, Triq San Kristofru, Valletta

Enrolment: Print an Application Form, fill in, sign and mail enclosing the relative payment, or else call at the Circle's office which is open between Monday and Friday from 9.00a.m. till 12.30p.m. and from 4.30p.m. till 8.00p.m. and on Saturday from 9.00a.m. till 1.00p.m. 

All applicants are required to state their choice of class upon registration. Please take note of your choice - no individual reminders will be issued. Our staff will be pleased to help you choose your course, though no responsibility is accepted for the final choice which must be made by the individual student. 

Enrolment for any class will close once the maximum number of students in that class is reached. Bookings cannot be accepted by telephone.

Schoolchildren and persons under 14 years of age cannot be registered for the courses for adults.  

Courses' Fee: The fee for each course is indicated against each course listed below.  The course fee is to be paid in advance upon enrolment.  All course fees are exclusive of any examination fees.  Except for thee Short Courses and for the Maltese Language Course payment terms by instalment are accepted.  Please contact our office for more details.

Membership subscription 2012: The membership fee of €12.00 is to be paid before registering for any course.  Membership to the German-Maltese Circle is obligatory for all applicants.  Membership entitles applicants to the free use of the Library facilities and to the free access of all the Circle's activities.  A monthly Newsletter is also mailed to all members.

Payment:  By cheque payable "German-Maltese Circle" or by cash settlement at the office or by online direct Bank transfer (request details).

The course fees indicated below cover all lessons for one complete scholastic year.

FEES PAID WILL NOT BE REFUNDED FOR WHATEVER REASON ONCE THE COURSES COMMENCE.

Holidays:  No classes will be held during the Christmas and the Easter breaks as well as on Public Holidays.  For more detailed information contact the office.

Examinations & Certificates: At the end of each course, applicants will be able to sit for an examination consisting of a written and of an oral session leading to a Goethe Institute Certificate.  Goethe Institute examinations are well known throughout the world and the associated certificates are accepted as a qualification by employers and further education institutions in many countries.  For further information click here

All certificates/diplomas issued by the Goethe Institute are recognised by the Malta Qualifications Council.

For students who do not sit for an examination or for students who fail their examination, a Certificate of Attendance can be issued upon request if the applicant would have attended to at least 70% of the total number of lessons held throughout the year.

Self-assessment test: External applicants can assess their German language competence prior to enrolment to any course above the Grundstufe (A1), by doing an online multiple choice test.  Click here to proceed.

Grundstufe I - Beginners' First Year Course (CEFR Level A1):

Course leads to the internationally recognised START 1 examination
Lessons of 90 minutes each on Tuesdays and Fridays
Class A: At 5.30p.m.   OR   Class B: At 7.00p.m.
First lesson on Friday, 7th October
Course fee: €200,00                                                                                                                                          

This course is intended for those who wish to start learning German right from the beginning. No previous knowledge of the language is required.   Conversation and simple communication situations form part of this course. 

After completing this course, you should have achieved Breakthrough Level (A1) of the Common European Framework of Reference, namely, you can understand and use familiar, day-to-day expressions and simple sentences, and can introduce yourself and others. You can ask other people personal questions and respond to such questions themselves. You can conduct a basic conversation provided the other speakers speak slowly and clearly and are willing to help.

Grundstufe II - Second Year Course (CEFR Level A2): 
Course leads to the internationally recognised START 2 examination

Lessons of 90 minutes each.
On Mondays and Thursdays at 6.00p.m.
First lesson on Thursday, 6th October 
Course fee: €250,00

This course is intended primarily for those persons who have completed our First Year Course or are not complete beginners.  After completing this course you can understand sentences and frequently used expressions which relate to the immediate situation (for example information about yourself, about work, etc). You can communicate in familiar, simple situations about familiar topics. You can describe your own background and education using simple constructions and can talk about the immediate surroundings and immediate needs.

Course leading to the "
ZERTIFIKAT DEUTSCH" (ZD) / "ZERTIFIKAT DEUTSCH FÜR JUGENDLICHE" (ZDj)  
Goethe Institute internationally recognised certificates - CEFR Level B1

Lessons of 90 minutes each.
On Mondays & Thursdays at 6.00p.m.
First lesson on Thursday, 6th October
Course fee: €250,00   
    
Students with a CEFR A2 level in German (GI Start 2 or SEC Grade 4 or lower) can apply for this course. Candidates will be trained in letter writing, listening and reading comprehensions, multiple choice exercises and conversation. 

After completing this course, you can understand the main points in a conversation about familiar topics like work, school, free time, provided other speakers use clear standard language. You can manage most situations that can be encountered when travelling in German speaking countries. You can speak coherently about familiar topics and areas of interest using simple constructions.

Course preparing for the Goethe Institut Zertifikat B2

On Mondays and Thursdays at 6.00p.m.
First lesson on Thursday, 6th October
Group A - Open to applicants who are under 18 years OR have NOT attended the B1 Course
Lessons of 120 minutes each.  
Course fee: €300,00
Group B - Open to applicants aged 18 and over and have followed the B1 Course
Lessons of 90 minutes each. 
  Course fee: €250,00

Students with a CEFR B1 level in German (GI ZD/ZDj or SEC grades 1,2 or 3) who want to reach an advanced level in German but do NOT have the MATSEC Advanced Level examination as their objective can apply for this course.

On completion of this course, you can understand the main points of complex texts about concrete and abstract topics. In your own specialist area, you can follow specialist discussions. You are able to communicate spontaneously and fluently, allowing a normal conversation with native speakers without great effort on either side. You can talk about a wide range of topics clearly and in detail.

Course preparing for the MATSEC Advanced Level German 2012: 

Lessons of 90 minutes each.
On Tuesdays & Fridays at 6.00p.m.
First lesson on Friday, 7th October
Course fee: €300,00 

This course is open to students who wish to sit for the MATSEC A Level German in 2012.  The course content includes grammar, literature and Landeskunde.

Course leading to the Goethe Institut Zertifikat C1

Lessons of 90 minutes each.
On Tuesdays & Fridays at 6.00p.m.
First lesson on Friday, 7th October
Course fee: €300,00 
      
This course is open to students who have a B2 level in German and/or to those with an "A" level in German.  After completion of this course, you can understand a wide range of sophisticated, long texts and can understand implicit meanings. You can use the language in social and professional situations or in training and study both effectively and flexibly. You can discuss complex topics in a thorough and structured manner.

Course leading to the Goethe Zertifikat C2 / Großes Sprachdiplom:
Lessons of 2 hours each.
On Mondays & Thursdays at 6.00p.m.
First lesson on
Thursday, 6th October
Part One Course fee: €400,00 

On 1 January 2012, the Goethe Certificate C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (i,e, advanced German-language diploma) will be introduced. It will replace the three current Goethe Certificate C2-level examinations: ZOP, Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom (i.e. basic German-language diploma) and the Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (GDS).

This course, divided in three parts (spread over 2 years), is open to students who have a CEFR C1 level.  Examination is due December 2013.  On completion of the whole course, you can effortlessly understand everything you hear or read. You can communicate spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, and are able to communicate nuances of meaning.


NOTE:  The final preparatory session leading to the GI Zertifikat C2 examination due in December 2011 will be starting on Thursday, 1st September.  For application and information contact Office.
