"Is German really a difficult language?" a well-attended public forum with a panel made up of Frau Frauke van der Werff from the Goethe Institute of Milan, GMC President, Mr Albert Friggieri and Mr Herbert Conrad a former teacher of German for many years at the University of Malta, in State Schools and at the German-Maltese Circle.

20th February 

Prof Dr Francis Jarman from the University of Hildesheim delivered a lecture on "The World of German Universities" at the end of which a pleasant surprise awaited Robert Bonnici, a University student and a member of our Association. Robert had applied to spend one semester at the University of Hildesheim on the basis of the Socrates students’ exchange programme. Dr Jarman announced that as a special welcome to Robert who happened to be the first Maltese student at the University of Hildesheim, it was decided to grant him a special scholarship for his stay in Germany.

Prof. Dr Rainer Dietrich, ordentlicher Professor at the Institute of German and Linguistics of the Humboldt University in Berlin gave a most interesting lecture on the use of language in particularly stressful situations, concentrating on the use of language in the cockpit. This was a special occasion for GMC President Mr Albert Friggieri since as a student of Heidelberg University he had met Prof. Dietrich there for the first time 30 years ago! Mr Friggieri spent six years as a student of Prof. Dietrich.

14th March 
Mrs Ingrid B.Kidder, the Vice-President of the Deutsch-Maltesische Gesellschaft opened an exhibition of paintings by newcomer George Farrugia. The Exhibition was also held under the auspices of the Valletta History & Elegance Festival 2002. A crowd of about 150 guests, mostly local painters and ceramists, led by the German Ambassador, H.E.Mr Georg Merten patronised the opening of this Exhibition.

31st March 
Reception hosted by Ambassador H.E.Mr Georg Merten in honour of the Kammersolisten Augsburg who had performed two lovely concerts over Easter at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta.

16th April 

An extremely superb Concert of Sacred Music by JS Bach at St John's Co-Cathedral attended by well over 800 persons with the participation of Claire Massa (Mezzo Soprano), Rebecca Hall and Robert Calleja (Flaut), John McDonough (Oboe) and Alice Pullen (Harpsichord).
The CHoir & Orchestra of the Sir Adrian Girls' Junior Lyceum during the German Musical & Literary Evening19th April 
The Corinthia San Gorg Tower Suite was packed with parents of students attending the Sir Adrian Dingli Girls’ Junior Lyceum (Pembroke), teachers, as well as with German and Maltese members of the German-Maltese Circle for an evening dedicated to German music and literature. In all, over one hundred girls from the Sir Adrian Dingli Girls’ Junior Lyceum participated reciting poems and other literary texts written by famous German authors such as Schiller, Krüss, Goethe and Busch and performing in the School Orchestra and Choir rendering German traditional folk-songs or popular selections by well-known German composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, Bach, Mendelssohn and Haydn.

24th April 
The German Ambassador, H.E.Mr Georg Merten opened "Emotions of Light & Shadow" an exhibition of modern digitally composed photographs by Martin Abela also in front of a large audience.

Celebrating Händel, a Poster Exhibition inaugurated by the German Ambassador H.E.Mr Georg Merten. Nineteen large posters depicting the German composer’s connection with the city of Halle, his birthplace beginning with an overview of Halle throughout the centuries and its most prominent places and illustrating how Halle has later reflected the life of its great son through the organisation of numerous festivals, exhibitions and conferences.

29th May 

Public Lecture by Dr Hector Cutajar on Dr Bernhard von Gudden who at the height of his career was commissioned to provide psychiatric care for the Bavarian royal family.

15th June 
Liederabend featuring works by Bach, Schubert, Brahms and Schumann with the participation of Baritone Joe Huber,Leanne Baldacchino Anastasi (piano)and André-Paul Huber (flute)at St James Center for Creativity.

18th June 
Talk by Dr Joe Grixti, senior lecturer in the School of Social and Cultural Studies at the Auckland Campus of Massey University, New Zealand on a survey dealing with "Young children's perceptions of adult-rated TV Programmes". The talk focused on how children's experiences of watching television influence their emerging sense of identityand it examined how children aged 5 to 10 talk about and perceive adult-rated material on television, and how this relates to their understanding of the ways in which adulthood is distinguished from childhood. The talk considered also evidence from a major qualitative research project undertaken in Malta in which extensive interviews were conducted with a broad range of children, teachers and parents.

Press Conference to mark a donation of 200 German literature books by contemporary authors for the German-Maltese Circle's Library.  This collection came from eleven different Publishing Houses in Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg as a result of an initiative taken by one of our supporting members Mr Lothar Ruske. 

22nd September
Wahlparty - an Open House at Messina Palace on the occassion of the German Federal Elections with direct satellite TV connection with the main German TV stations.

27th September
Certificate Giving Ceremony held in Victoria, Gozo for students who had finished our language courses there.  Among those attending were the Minister for Gozo, Mrs Giovanna Debono, the German Ambassador, Mr Georg Merten, the Circle's President Mr Albert Friggieri, Heads of Departments in Gozo and teachers of German in Gozo.

The Executive Committee of the German-Maltese Circle pays an official visit to the President of Malta H.E.Prof. Dr Guido De Marco on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the foundation of the Circle

Seminar for teachers on the subject “Neuere Tendenzen der deutschen Sprache” conducted by Dr Uwe Mohr from the Goethe Institute in Rome

28th November
Screening of a documentary film on Namibia (a former German colony) with an introduction by Frau Ingrid Kidder

Certificate Giving Ceremony for students who finished the Grundstufe courses
