15th January  Poetry evening followed by the opening of an exhibition of hand-painted silks by Gozo resident artist Teresa Bencini 

5th February  The German-Maltese Circle gave official presentations to the delegates taking part in the fifth session of the Cultural Mixed Commission between the Governments of Malta and Germany

26th April   Full day seminar attended by 22 teachers of German on the subject "Videos im Unterricht" held at Messina Palace by Frau Karin Hartmann 

12th May Introductory meeting for persons interested in co-ordinating activities to commemorate Ferdinand's von Hompesch reign in 1798.  Formation of the Hompesch Commemoration Committee 

14th May Wilhelm Busch Lesung with music and slides with the participation of Uwe Lau and Jorge Laborno 

15th May Launching of the German Pavilion in the 40th edition of the Malta Trade Fair with a Marketing Presentation and reception hosted by Mr. Alfred Gerth, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy

16th May Opening by H.E. Mr. Gerhard Kunz of an Exhibition "Creatures of the Earth" with paintings by Helene Moch 

10-11th June Dr Helmut Grau, head of the Language Department in the Goethe Institute in Rome visited Messina Palace for talks with officials and teachers of German

4th July Buffet Dinner at the Seabank Hotel for members and their guests 

29th September   Launching of the German Language Course "Deutsch - warum nicht?" on the University Radio

2nd October Launching of the German language courses 1997-1998

6th October Photographic Exhibition "Stations along the Road to German Unification"

18th October Opening of an Exhibition "Forests" put up by artists members of the ARE- Gilde with interventions amongst others by Mr Bernd Schiffarth, Mayor of Adenau  and by Prof. Kreutzberg, President of the ARE-Gilde 

22nd October  A 50-strong group of Germans, members of the Una Sankta of Berlin attend an  informal talk organised for them at Messina Palace 

14th November Opening of an exhibition entitled "Paintings of three periods" by Ms Petra Stümpel, Cultural Attaché at the German Embassy, with works by Berlin  artist, Beatrice Bayr. 

22nd November  Public talk by Prof.Dr.Victor Mallia Milanes on "Hompesch - a reassessment  of the situation" in collaboration with the Hompesch Commemoration Committee.  Talk attended by the President of Malta, Dr Ugo Mifsud Bonnici. 

26th November Ludwig Thoma Abend - with the reading of short stories by Mr Uwe Lau and  music from Bavaria with Alexandra on the violin, 

30th November  Reception at Messina Palace on the occasion of the first anniversary of the German-speaking Protestant Parish in Malta

4th December Visit to Messina Palace by Mrs Gabriel, the officer-in-charge of the Malta  Desk at the Auswärtiges Amt 

22nd December  Christmas Dinner for members of the Circle and their friends at the Coral  Suite of the Seabank Hotel in Mellieha Bay
