| Plot |
By telling the story of a Jewish scholar, a professor of philosophy, who returns to teach at his old university in Germany after years of exile in the United States, Mr. Kortner has found a fair way to make contact with the academic life of post-war Germany on a level that is valid and entirely plausible.
And the consequent dramatic demonstration of latent nazism in these intellectual realms, of continuing "racial" animosities, professional jealousies and a spirit of revenge tossing in the frustrated students, merits general and attentive regard. Although the academic conversations tend to run to tedious lengths, there is volatile and significant action in these phases, especially in-one scene of a beer-hall brawl.
